Auricular (ear) acupuncture
Auricular acupuncture, or ear acupuncture, is a form of acupuncture that stimulates specific points on the external ear. While ear treatments have roots in traditional Chinese Medicine, the modern system of auricular acupuncture was further developed in the 20th century, particularly through the work of French physician Dr Paul Nogier.
The ear contains many nerve endings and is viewed in auricular therapy as a microsystem representing different areas and functions of the body. Depending on your individual presentation, specific ear points may be selected and stimulated as part of your treatment.
At Willow Tree Acupuncture, auricular (ear) acupuncture is selected when clinically appropriate and tailored to each individual's needs and treatment goals.
❋ What to expect
Very fine, sterile, single-use acupuncture needles can be inserted into selected points on the outer ear. The needles are generally retained for a short period while you relax and may be used on their own or alongside your regular body acupuncture treatment.
Auricular acupuncture may be incorporated into treatment plans addressing areas such as pain, stress and relaxation, sleep difficulties, digestive complaints and general wellbeing and are even used for treating addictions, help with PTSD and weight loss depending on the individual's presentation.
❋ What does it feel like?
Auricular acupuncture may produce a brief sensation when the needle is inserted, while ear seeds usually feel like a small point of pressure when pressed. Some ear points can feel more tender than others.
At Willow Tree Acupuncture, auricular acupuncture and ear seeds may be used on their own or incorporated into a broader treatment alongside traditional acupuncture, electroacupuncture and other Chinese Medicine techniques, depending on your individual needs.
❋ What are ear seeds?
For those who prefer a needle-free option, or when we want to continue gentle stimulation of an auricular point after you leave the clinic, ear seeds may be used. Tiny seeds or small pellets are attached to selected points on the ear using a
small piece of adhesive tape. They remain in place for several days and can be gently pressed by the patient at home, providing intermittent stimulation between acupuncture appointments.
Ear seeds are discreet, easy
to wear and can be particularly useful for people who are nervous about needles or as an addition to a regular acupuncture treatment.
