What is Acupuncture and its associated therapies?
Acupuncture is a holistic therapy that may involve manual acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and auricular (ear) acupuncture, selected according to individual needs. Fine, sterile needles are used to stimulate specific points on the body and ears.
From a Western perspective, acupuncture may support nervous system regulation, improve local circulation, reduce muscular tension, and assist the body’s natural pain-modulating and healing responses. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine viewpoint, acupuncture works to regulate the flow of Qi and Blood, support organ system harmony, and address underlying patterns contributing to pain, stress, fatigue, or imbalance.
Treatments may also include moxibustion, which uses gentle warmth to support circulation and cold or deficient patterns, and gua sha, a soft-tissue technique used to release tension and promote blood flow. Together, these therapies are tailored to support physical, emotional, and overall wellbeing.
Electro (e-stimulation) Acupuncture
Electro-acupuncture involves passing a gentle, controlled electrical current through acupuncture needles at specific points. This enhances the stimulation of the points and can be particularly effective for pain relief, slowing down bone degeneration, muscle tension, or nerve-related issues. It can be used for acute and chronic conditions.
Western view: May increase local blood flow, stimulate nerve responses, and support the body’s natural pain-modulating and healing mechanisms.
TCM view: Enhances the flow of Qi and Blood along the meridians, helping to remove stagnation, strengthen weak areas, and restore balance to the body’s systems.
Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture
Auricular acupuncture focuses on points on the ear, which correspond to the whole body in TCM microsystem theory. Small needles, beads, or seeds may be used to stimulate these points.
Western view: Can influence the nervous system, helping with stress, sleep, pain, and cravings.
TCM view: Supports organ balance, regulates Qi and Blood, and addresses both physical and emotional conditions by targeting corresponding ear points.
Acupuncture, Cupping, Chinese Herbs, Cosmetic Acupuncture, and more.
Acupuncture is a holistic treatment that may include a combination of manual acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and auricular (ear) acupuncture, depending on individual needs. Treatments may also incorporate complementary therapies such as moxibustion for gentle warmth and support in cold or deficient patterns, and gua sha, a soft tissue technique used to release tension and encourage circulation. Together, these therapies are tailored to support pain management, stress reduction, and overall wellbeing.
Cosmetic and Facial Acupuncture is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that supports skin health and overall wellbeing. Fine acupuncture needles are used on the face and body to encourage circulation, support muscle tone, and stimulate the skin’s natural regenerative processes, including pathways involved in collagen support. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, the face reflects internal balance, so treatments also aim to harmonise the body, supporting relaxation, stress regulation, and healthy ageing from within.
Cupping Therapy is a traditional treatment that uses gentle suction on the skin to support circulation and relieve muscular tension. From a Western perspective, cupping may help increase local blood flow, support tissue mobility, and assist the body’s natural recovery processes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, cupping is used to move Qi and Blood, helping to release stagnation that may contribute to pain, tightness, or fatigue. Treatments are commonly used for musculoskeletal discomfort, stress, and general wellbeing.
Willow Tree Acupuncture offers Chinese herbs in pre-prescription pill formulas only. Using Acupuncture and Chinese herbs together strengthens the success of the treatment and is especially helpful for chronic conditions, hormonal issues, digestive problems, stress-related symptoms, and fatigue, where the body needs both immediate support and ongoing regulation.
